About…

This is a retroblog. I am going to go back over my notes, writings, and experiences since 1970 and distill them here. At the same time, I intend to add new content as it happens. If nothing else, I’m sure that the Internet and it’s archives will outlast me. Call it my bid for some sort of remembrance.

The rules I’m going to use:

Dates before September 1, 2005 are retrospective entries.

I will date items as exactly as I can. That shouldn’t be too difficult as my slides and negatives have date codes on them that will get me to within a week in most cases, and other clues will get me even closer. In the case of my Logbook entries, the dates are exact.

I may write in the present tense even for past-posting. In that case, asides from a particular post’s “future” will be written in italics.

I will use people’s real first names, and will only use last names with permission or if they are deceased. In the event I choose to disguise a name, I will state so and the reasons why.

I moderate comments, not to censor, but to avoid spam.

Thanks to Saundra for saving me the time and effort of setting up WordPress. She’s a sweetie.

I’m a 50-plus average guy living in an average neighborhood in an average state. Nothing special to see here. I have a wide variety of interests- Aviation, railroading, reading, classical music, photography, computers, and a few others.

My grandson Nick took this picture of me one evening while we were clowning around in the back yard.

When WW2 ended I was reassigned to the 6th Cavalry Group, consisting of the 6th and 28th Squadrons. The first morning after joining the unit reassigned itself to Berlin in July 1945. Our first night in Lichterfelde West we billeted in what had been the barracks of the SS. Included where we were was a large warehouse, full of SS uniforms, emblems and equipment. In the courtyard the spoils of combat were still visible – like machine guns, panzerfausts and weapons in general. We then we were relacated a short distance easterly in Lichterfelde West. Without any specific recollections to tell you, we left Berlin in November 1945 and relocated in Erlangen, in southern Germany.

My further experiences involved serving through to 1948 with the U.S. Zone Constabulary.

Enough said. My last year was spent at Ft Dix, NJ as training cadre. Then I went home in 1949.

I love your posting on Andrews Berlin. It brought back alot of memories. I was stationed at the FSB from Feb 1977 to Feb 1979. I found your site by gooling Al Mulinos in Berlin. Isn’t the internet amazing. My family is planning a trip to Berlin and I wanted to see if Al Mulinos was still open. I love their Italian onion soup.
I am also a native of Indy. I miss the culture and especially the Museum of Art.
