Painting with Light

Skies
Sometimes things just happen. I was taking skyline pictures when this woman walked by wearing a beautiful evening gown- she was attending some event at the Indiana State Museum behind me. She asked me a question about the Memorial across the canal- and as I explained it, I remarked on how beautiful her gown was, and asked her to step into my picture. All I needed was a way to light her interestingly.

Fortunately, I had a 6 volt lantern flashlight with me, and as I tripped the shutter for the 4 second base exposure at f/8, I used the flashlight to illuminate her standing there. You can see the final effect- her skirt, moving gently in the breeze, turned into a soft fabric waterfall. You can’t plan for stuff like this- you just have to recognize it when it happens.
