So I’ve mentioned the hailstorm we had back in April, and today the roofers came and put on the new roof. I got home from work about 7:45, and had just sat down to look at my email when I heard a thump up on top of the roof. I looked at my watch…. It was 8 AM on the dot.

By the time I got outside, the roofers had already started stripping the shingles. There were 6 of them, and I just watched as they began a well-practiced and choreographed routine, splitting into two teams at first, one guy using a pair of pitchforks to strip the old shingles, and two assistants gathering the rolled up old shingles and taking them to the dumpster parked in the driveway.

By 9:20 AM, they were down to the last few strips of shingles on the garage.
At 9:36 AM, the last of the old shingles came off.
Half of the team immediately went to work hammering down old nails and cleaning up the surface of the decking in preparation for the new material.

At 9:52, the first new material is on the roof.
New material in my case included one piece of new decking, where some rotting had occurred over the years at a junction between the main house and the addition I built in 1995.
By 10:04, the roof is well on its way to being covered in tarpaper. At this point, I was getting pretty sleepy, having worked the night shift, and decided to try and get some sleep, accompanied by a chorus of hammers as the shingles went on.
I woke up about 3:30 PM and went to the garage, where I was confronted by a full trailer of debris.
At 3:57 PM , the last nails went into the shed.
The finished roof:
Looks Good Dad! Wow that was fast. I could have used those guys when I redid the garage roof.
