I sold my pickup truck today after nearly 10 years and 160,525 miles. It was the third vehicle I’d purchased new in my life, and the one I lived with for the longest period. I replaced it with a newish (2004) van, because I needed more cargo space. I sold it to a gentleman who happened to live on the same street I lived on in 1969; he needed a daily commute-to-work truck. Oddly enough, I felt a little guilty and duplicitous driving it on our last trip together, over to the new owner’s house. I removed the plates, signed over the paperwork, and that was that. Jason drove me to the bank from there to deposit the cash from the sale; as we drove away, I took one last look at it sitting there on that foreign street. A twinge of conscience, perhaps, for all the time it served me so faithfully and well. The driveway will look strange from now on without it.
