I’m spending another sleepless night in front of the computer. That’s actually a little misleading because all of my nights are spent awake, since that’s when I work. There’s a certain amount of peace to it, although I get a feeling of responsibility towards the rest of my family, asleep in their beds. I’m the night watchman when I’m here on the weekends, looking after the safety of all who sleep around me. The other night I was wasting time surfing around on the net when, at about 5 AM I see my granddaughter peeking around the monitor. She had gotten up to use the bathroom, and was wandering around half asleep. She climbed up in my lap, and we had a couple of quiet moments just sitting there, bathed in the cool blue light of the monitor, she content to just be there, cradling her favorite toy, comfortable against me, and me just awash with a protective tenderness towards her. Sometimes being the night watchman isn’t such a bad job after all.
